Early Signs of Pregnancy

Can you feel changes in your body before a missed period? For some, the Early Pregnancy Signs show up quickly, while others might not notice anything at all. So how can you tell if you’re pregnant?

Susann Friis-Lundevall, shares both common and lesser-known early pregnancy symptoms to help you better understand your body.

Common Early Signs of Pregnancy

Symptoms vary widely from person to person—some may experience several, while others may feel little to nothing. Here are some of the most typical signs that may appear just 1–2 weeks after conception:

1. Missed Period

Perhaps the most well-known sign. If your period doesn’t arrive as expected—especially if your cycle is usually regular—it could be a sign of pregnancy.

2. Implantation Bleeding

Some people experience light spotting when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. This spotting is usually light pink or brown and less heavy than a normal period.

3. Sore or Swollen Breasts

Hormonal changes may cause your breasts to feel tender, swollen, or heavier than usual.

4. Nausea and Vomiting

Often referred to as “morning sickness,” nausea can actually occur at any time of day. It typically begins around week 5–6 and may peak during the first trimester. For most, it eases by week 12–14, though some may experience it longer.

“While nausea is common and usually harmless, if you’re unable to eat or stay hydrated, it’s important to seek care,” says Susann Friis-Lundevall.

5. Changes in Appetite or Taste

You may lose your appetite or crave unusual foods. Some people notice a metallic taste in their mouth.

6. Fatigue

Feeling unusually tired is very common due to rising levels of progesterone, which can make you feel sleepy and low on energy.

7. Heightened Sense of Smell

Many pregnant individuals report a sudden sensitivity to smells—sometimes to the point of nausea or discomfort.

8. Cramping or Lower Abdominal Discomfort

Mild cramping that resembles period pain is a frequent early pregnancy symptom. It’s usually harmless but should be evaluated if it’s severe or accompanied by bleeding.

“Abdominal discomfort is common in pregnancy, but if you experience intense pain or pain with bleeding, seek medical attention,” advises Susann.

9. Frequent Urination

The need to urinate more often can appear early in pregnancy, partly due to hormonal changes and increased blood flow to the pelvic area.

10. Mood Swings

Hormonal fluctuations can cause emotional ups and downs—you may find yourself crying or laughing more easily than usual.

11. Increased Vaginal Discharge

You might notice more discharge than usual. It’s often clear or white and odorless, and it’s caused by changes in the vaginal lining.

12. Headaches

Headaches in early pregnancy can be linked to hormones, muscle tension, and fatigue.

13. Low Blood Pressure and Dizziness

Some people feel lightheaded or dizzy, especially when standing up quickly. This is often due to lower blood pressure in early pregnancy.

Uncommon Early Pregnancy Signs

In addition to the classic symptoms, you may also experience:

  • Metallic taste in the mouth
  • Excess saliva production
  • Constipation
  • Nasal congestion or nosebleeds
  • Skin changes like acne or darker pigmentation

When Should You Take a Pregnancy Test?

For the most reliable result, wait until your expected period date before testing.
“Some tests can detect pregnancy a few days before your period, but for better accuracy, it’s best to wait,” says Susann.
“If you’re unsure when your period is due, test about three weeks after possible conception.”
